Hearing-Aid Battery Provision in the Southern Parishes

The responsibility for the provision of batteries is shared between the Audiology Departments of the larger hospitals and the Hampshire Primary Care Trust.

There are no provisions for the distribution of NHS hearing-aid batteries in the whole of the Southern Parishes.

The nearest centres are the NHS Clinics provided by neighbouring PCTs: Southampton PCT– Bitterne and Woolston
Portsmouth PCT – Sylvan Clinic at Park Gate.

Other more distant Centres are at the major hospitals of Southampton, Winchester and Portsmouth, and at an Eastleigh clinic, provided by Hampshire PCT.

Auiology Departments also provide a postal service. The Record Book, used batteries and a stamped addressed envelope are required.

These provisions do not accord with the Department of Health recommendations: “Improving Access to Audiology Services in England, March 2007”; “Transforming Adult Hearing Services for Patients with Hearing Difficulty, June 2007”; the “Care Closer to Home Programme”.

ESPOPF is urging the Hampshire PCT to make use of the provisions of the NHS to commission the Pharmacy at Blackthorn Health Centre, in the first instance, to provide more local services.

Success! From the NHS PCB

Following discussions involving the Audiology department at SUHT, Blackthorn Health Centre, Hedge End Medical Centre and ESPOPF. we have an agreement to supply the batteries to both Blackthorn and Hedge End Medical Centre. There is a requirement for a letter from the PCT commissioning team to SUHT to confirm the PCT commitment to this extension but this is being handled by Julie Wood.
So just 3 months into our new year and we have a success to celebrate!!
I would like to thank you and all your members for bring this issue to the PBC group as we would not have known of this issue without you engagement.

Don't count your chickens...

The Hearing Aid batteries progress is being hampered by, as far as I am told, SUHT requesting more funding for putting batteries onto a van that already goes to both practices (Blackthorn Health Centre and Hedge End Health Centre). However the PCT contract team is working towards a solution.
This is obviously a very difficult administrative problem: meanwhile, we can't hear.
